Election 2010 is Over

I would like to thank all those who supported me during this campaign. It feels good to have represented the Town of LaSalle as your Councillor for the past 4 years. It has been a great experience that I will always have. It is unfortunate that after all the great achievments that were achieved that the electorate wanted change. I hope that the new council will be able to continue the great things started this past term. Sometimes we look at personalities instead of what is accomplished for the betterment of the Town of LaSalle as a whole. I wish the Town of LaSalle and the new Council well during the next 4 years.

During the many construction projects that are going on in LaSalle at this time I encourage everyone again to Support our Local Businesses. They need our local support the same as we always encourage everyone to support our local famers that grow local food for us every year.

Merchants suffer during Construction

Many of our town businesses are hurting during construction work that is taking place. I know that we like to avoid the construction zones but if you are looking to purchase something, I encourage everyone to support these merchants in any way possible, especially during the construction period. They ARE open for business and you can get to them. When business is down at these establishments, the employees are also affected as well with reduced hours of employment and subsequently they lose wages that they rely on. Please do what you can and

Laurier Parkway (update)

The long awaited Laurier Parkway is finally taking shape. If you travel along Disputed, or Huron Line you will see the road base in place and the street lights installed. Mine you the lights should have been LED and not high pressure sodium. The asphalting should begin in a week or so which will add a whole different dimension to many of our travel routes in the future.

Candidate's Meeting 2010

The Candidate's Meeting held few surprises this year. The attendance was down indicating that people are generally satisfied with what is going on. It was a good opportunity for all the candidates to meet each other. A record number of candidates are running and all were present. I will say this, I am very impressed with the candidates this time. We have a lot of good people trying for the first time to move into Municipal politics and I wish them all well.

Question and answer sessions held no contentious issues. One of the main concerns came from small business and how can we as a municipality help out our small business especially through these economic time.

What did you think of the Meeting?

Trinity St. finally opens in LaSalle

Trinity Street has finally opened. This is a roadway that is behind the Price Chopper Grocery Store on Delmar St. If you are looking for a alternative route along Malden Road around the construction, you can turn East on Suzanne St. and at the first intersection turn left, go over the bridge and continue on to Ellis St. and you will come to Normandy St. Continue straight on Ellis and it will go behind the Zehrs Grocery Store. Ellis becomes Trinity and you continue to Wyoming St. Turn right and it will take you by Sandwich West Public School and from there you can get to Todd Lane.

You can also access all the stores in all the Malden Road plazas a lot easier if you use this route. All the way to the Tim Hortons!!!!!

NEW HOME CONSTRUCTION ON THE RISE !!!

New home construction permits are up substantially this year to date for the first 6 months of 2010. For the last 3 years LaSalle has averaged just under 38 new home permits for the first 6 months of each year. For the first 6 months of 2010 there have been 74 new home permits which is almost double. This is great news.

To date we have lost 93 properties to the new DRIC highway. They are not all residential homes but the majority are. We do not know where all these tax payers have relocated but it is safe to say that a number have relocated into LaSalle either by buying an already existing home for sale on the real estate market and by the looks of the increase of new homes being built it tends to leave the image that others must be opting to build new homes again in LaSalle. I don't believe that the economy has picked up enough to justify the substantial building increase. I believe people are staying in LaSalle because they want to be here. What do you think?

LED Streetlighting in LaSalle

Something I have tried to push for in LaSalle for the last 4 years is installing LED street lighting. Sometimes it takes time and a whole lot of effort to move a mountain. With all the road and parking lot projects in progress I still haven't been able to convince people that we should switch to LED lighting.

Every council meeting that we have, council has to approve expenses from the previous meeting and I see the cost of electricity for street lights and know we can save 30% to 40% of electricity cost alone not including the maintenance costs of the high pressure sodium. With electricity increases coming in the new year I think that it only makes sense to start now and put in LED. Take time and check out LED lights. The Town of Essex has some installed and you can go and see first hand what they would look like and let me know what you think.

Coyotes in LaSalle

Coyotes have been populating in our town over the last number of years. The Ministry of Natural Resources has published a number of tips for the public in dealing with them.

- do not approoach or feed coyotes
- secure garbage
- keep all pets on leashes or conffined to a yard
- prevent predation on livestock with barns or sheds

Royal Canadian Legion Branch 594 is Moving

594 as we all know the Legion by is moving because of the new DRIC highway requiring the property. The Legion has scuccessfully negotiated a sale of the property to DRIC and will move by the end of this year. What would have been ideal is for the Legion to relocate in LaSalle. After all they have played a promenent role as a service club in LaSalle since 1961. I will explain the importance of having "Service Clubs" in LaSalle in a future posting.

They were not able to secure a deal with a sight in LaSalle to rebuild or buy and that is unfortunate for the town. They will relocate on Howard Ave. but on the Tecumseh side of the road. We are fortunate that they will still play a large roll in LaSalle with everything that they do and provide including the Remembrance Day Celebrations. Their physical (building) presence in the town will surely be missed.

Municipal Elections "Do" Matter

Thursday's Windsor Star had an article by Lloyd Brown-John titled Municipal Elections Matter. If you have the chance do read it. He is so true when he says that "small municipality councils tend to be less formal but municipal obligations remain just as demanding." He goes on to drive home the point that VOTING does matter and your vote does count. It is important that we familiarize ourselves with the candidates and know we are voting for the right people and for the right reasons.
This election you will be able to vote by mail in ballot. You will be able to spend some time at home deciding on which candidates you think are best suited to do a good job.
Please make sure you vote!

Tornado Warning System For LaSalle

Does LaSalle need a warning system? What would work? Sirens are not in LaSalle and there is no formal system in place. Would Sirens work? People generally keep close to the television or radio when the weather gets nasty for up to the minute advice. What do you think?

Czech Replublic Hockey Team comes to LaSalle

The Czech Replubic under 20 Mens's National Hockey Team is coming to the Vollmer Recreation Centre to play the University of Windsor Men's Hockey Team in an exhibition game. The game will take place on Friday September 10, 2010. It will certainly be a sellout so get your tickets early. DRIC Project - Windsor Essex Parkway

The DRIC project (Detroit River International Committee) has been busy during the last 4 years aquiring the needed properties along the projected new highway and border crossing route. To date they have successfully negotiated with 93 of the 139 projected property owners. I believe that all 93 property owners have been very happy with their compensation packages. This was one of my concerns 4 years ago in that everyone would be treated fairly in compensation and I now feel confident that all will be compensated adequately. I don't know how many property owners have relocated in LaSalle but I encourage all of them to do so.

Laurier Parkway Construction

If you get the opportunity take a ride and get a feeling and a view of where the new Laurier Parkway road will intersect Disputed Road and Huron Line and come out onto Howard Ave. It will be a great connection for anyone needing to get to the 401 for travelling. It will be a great alternative for just getting to work for some and also simplify directions for out of town people to find LaSalle.

Colonel Bishop Park Begins

LaSalle has began building the much anticipated Colonel Bishop Park on the old site of the former school of the same name. The playground has been installed already as one of the first items. Path ways and picnic areas will follow. There will be some other sorts of amenities to follow and a number of trees will complete the park setting . I know many of you have been waiting for this park to be completed for some time. I hope it meets everyone's expectations.

Riverdance project under way

A lot of activity on the weekend as many loads of top soil were hauled into the project. It will be levelled out as part of the landscape that will eventually be a major part of the first phase project. It will be a passive park area that will be adjacent to the building that will begin construction shortly to the south and house the University of Windsor fish research lab. More details will follow.

Dubbed this term as a "Successful Term"

I have dubbed this term as a "Successful term." We have been very fortunate to receive a lot of stimulas dollars from the Federal and Provincal Governments. The town applies for financial assistance for large projects, typically infastructure projects. If approved it has to be blessed by both Federal and Provincial levels because they each provide 1/3 of the funding and the town has to fund 1/3 as well. The town's share is typically in a reserve fund that has been accumulating over a period of time. A lot of projects this summer will hamper getting around town but the end results will well out weigh the inconviences.
